I need to put an edge binding on some indoor outdoor carpet?

We are putting indoor outdoor carpet on the deck of a bass boat and want to keep the edges from fraying

carpet stores have binding machines to do it but they charge for it. I'm assuming that you are worried about the edges and any seams that you will have. If you are glueing the carpet to the deck of the boat then use taylor 775 it is a product we use whenever we are putting seams together in gluedown carpet, when it dries it like rubber to it won't frey or come lose if you are using in around the edge then use an applicator bottle squeeze some onto the floor and lay the carpet into it. for the seams you do the same thing. If you don't want to mess with that and you have a lip around the deck of the boat use a metal stair nosing it will cover the edges and it can be either nailed or screwed down.

Indoor/Outdoor Herb Garden

Herb gardens can be therapeutic, fragrant, beautiful and delicious. Planting an herb garden is easy and fun. You can grow it indoors or out. Even starting from seed, you can start to harvest your own fresh herbs within about a month.

Start with small pots, window planter or plant directly in your garden. Planting in small containers can give you a little bit more control over your herbs’ sun and weather exposure. Make sure that the containers you choose allow for plenty of drainage. Most herbs have delicate root systems that can easily rot if they are kept too wet. You can add rocks, moss or sand to the bottom of each container to encourage drainage.

The next step is to prepare the soil for your herb garden. You can just use potting soil, but a little extra effort can go a long way. Ideally, twenty-five percent of your mix should be compost material. Manure, humus and peat make good compost if you do not have your own compost bin. If your soil has a lot of clay, you may need to work in a little sand. Clay soil is usually orange or reddish in appearance. It is hard and does not drain well. If your soil has too much sand, it may drain too much. In this case, add more potting soil or compost.

Once your soil is prepared, you will be ready to plant. Sprouting from seeds will help you avoid soil borne diseases that may be lurking in nursery potted plants. Soak new seeds in water overnight if you have time. Another method is to place the seeds on a wet paper towel inside of a plastic sandwich bag for a few days. Make sure that you keep it sealed. When sprouts are about an inch long, very carefully transport them to their permanent location. If you want, you can plant seeds directly in their containers. Make sure that you cover them with plastic wrap to protect them while they are so little. Soil should be moist when you plant.

When plants are about two inches tall, remove the plastic and let them get some sun. Be careful about temperatures over eighty degrees at this stage. Baby plants can easily get too hot or too dry and die. Bring indoors at night if you are in an area that is still experiencing any colder weather. Most people choose to keep their herb garden inside until plants are more mature. A window sill is a great place to ensure that you are letting your herbs get enough light.

Watering is very important. Since you want your planters to drain well, you will also have to watch for dryness. Ideally, the soil should be moist, not wet. Water your herb garden about daily. Watch for wilting, yellowing, crusting or extra dry soil. If your herb garden is outside, use a hose reel to keep your water hose close at hand for easy watering. Enjoy harvesting your herbs for months to come!

Is there a diff between a Digital Audio Cable (Optical) and a Toslink Cable?

I need a Digital Audio Cable (optical) so that my TVs sound comes out of my surround sound system (and not the tv itself). But all I see is this word Toslink and don't know if that's a brand name or a certain type of Digital Audio Optical Cable. Is it the same? Is it different?

Toslink is just another name for digital optical cable.

To add a correction to the previous answer, you can indeed get surround sound by connecting your TV to your surround system, if all your components are capable of handling Dolby Digital (and assuming a DD5.1 broadcast, of course). The TV should pass DD5.1 over optical, which your receiver should be able to process into true surround sound. (If you do have a cable TV or satellite box, though, running sound directly from that is a better idea.)

Texperson: we're in violent agreement. If the TV is receiving its signal OTA, it can send DD5.1 over optical. If it's not OTA, there's a better choice for digital output, namely the cable or satellite box. The original post says nothing about either of those being available.

Toslink And Vga Cable Variations And Differences

Video Graphics Array (VGA) cables and Toslink cables are similar in that both are used to transmit electronic signals. However, this is where the similarities end as there are far more differences than similarities between the two both in function and design.

Some other common names used for VGA cable is the mini D15, RGB and D sub 15. The purpose of these is to give a type of the connector end of the cable, which has three rows of five pins for each one. The actual generic name is "EIAJ optical" or Electronic Industries Association of Japan optical cable and connector. Toshiba invented it for the purpose of linking their CD players to their PCM audio stream receivers. While VGA cables carry analog video signals, Toslink cables are fiber optic cables transferring strictly digital signals.

Toslinks optical fibers might be a number of construction types, from thin plastic optical fiber to high quality glass, it is dependent on how it's being used. Most of the time the maximum length for these cables is approximately 15 feet but if it's specifications are necessary it can go up to 33 feet. Many consumers think that the red light that transmits is a laser, but really it's a red LED or light emitting diode that moves the light.

How do I know the quality of a home theater system?

Using specifications such as wattage, etc, how can I tell the quality of a home theater system? I want to find a good set for around $100-$200 but I don't know a lot about sound fidelity. Also, any home theater system suggestions?

How should I upgrade my home theater system?

My home theater system sounds like crap. I have an entry-level dvd player and A/V receiver. The picture is ok, but the sound is real tinny. I have a pair of Bose 201s and a subwoofer (decent speakers). Any ideas? Should I invest in a better DVD player or a better A/V receiver?

Changing the DVD player won't help. Unless your A/V receiver is really bad, that's unlikely to help either.

The normal answer to this is "new speakers" since they have the most significant effect on your sound. But with 201's (not a bad bookshelf speaker despite the rampant and often deserved anti-Bose sentiment here) and a sub, the last thing your sound should be is "tinny".

I suspect you need to look at changing some settings to make sure your current setup is optimized before you start changing things.

If you can provide more details about your receiver (brand/type/model) and your subwoofer (type and connection method) more specific advice might be possible. In the meantime, here are some things to check:

- Make sure you understand and have set up your bass management properly. How is your sub connected? Is there a variable crossover and have you tried changing that setting? A likely cause of tinniness might be crossing over at too high a frequency and losing the mid-bass response of the main speakers.

- Make sure your main and center speakers are in proper phase (red/black connections the same to all speakers).

- Make sure you are using optimum dynamic range settings (this might be a setting both in the DVD player and/or the receiver). Unless you specifically want reduced dynamics (such as for late-night viewing or in an apartment), try setting all options to maximum range (or minimum compression) to add punch.

- Make sure your surround levels aren't set too high; in normal use you should barely notice your surrounds.

- Don't be afraid to use the tone controls: "flat" sound often winds up sounding tinny in real-world environments where high-frequencies resonate more than lower freqs.

My Dream Home Theater System!

HOME THEATER

Nothing beats having a killer home theater system. Big screen TV with high-definition, surround sound where I can plug in my iPod Nano, the latest DVD technology, video on demand, an Xbox 360, a hookup for my digital camcorder - the list goes on and on. Man, I'd love to have an awesome home theater inside my house. I'd never go outside if I did! And there's just some much stuff to choose from when it comes to building your own home theater. Seating, systems, design, brand names, video games; I could easily spend thousands of dollars creating my dream home theater system. Of course, I don't have thousands of dollars to spend, but I can still dream about it!

My perfect home theater system would be completely wireless. No cables or cords whatsoever. And it isn't as far fetched as it sounds. More and more home theater systems are being built and designed to be wireless. That doesn't just include the home theater itself. That includes other aspects of the home theater like video games, PVRs, DVD players, video cameras and more. Pretty soon, the home theater cable connection won't even have a cable to connect! Now how awesome is that?

I'd have a big screen HDTV with crystal clear surround sound that would blow my mind. And when I got my home theater installed, up and running, I would plop myself on the couch with a seven-pound bag of popcorn and watch anything and everything that I can. Hey, that's the point of having a great home theater sound system, to watch stuff! The images would be clear, the sound immaculate and it would all work with only one remote control. Now that's a great home theater!

Of course, I would have an Xbox 360 or Playstation hooked up to this bad-boy. High-definition games played on a massive, high-def screen? I'd have every video game humanly possible and would completely immerse myself playing them!

A home theater allows you to experience TV rather than just sit and watch it. Imagine watching a hockey game where a hard body check on the boards rattles your bones too. Or watching war movie thinking you're going to be shot at. Or watching your home-movies on such a screen that it makes you feel like you're at the event all over again! Or playing the hottest and coolest Xbox or Playstation games! With your own home theater, seating is always at a premium and it's an experience like no other. And when you want to listen to music, just hook up your stereo system to your home theater. Imagine listening to Dark Side of the Moon on high-definition, high fidelity surround sound speakers? Any music fan will tell you that it would be the ultimate audio experience, and a home theater allows you to enjoy just that!

In the early 1990s, people decided to cocoon, or stay home rather than go out. Not so far after, home theaters got more and more complicated and detailed. Home theaters used to be exclusively for the super-rich, and their home theaters are actually movie theaters right at home, with home theater seating and everything. But with some careful saving and research, anyone can have a great home theater to fit their budget, lifestyle and space. As for me, one day I'll have an awesome home theater of my own, with a huge TV, amazing sound - all wireless of course! Until then, I'll just keep on dreaming about it!
