Five Easy Steps to De-clutter Cords and Cables

After the holidays, cables and wires are often a site for sore eyes amidst the influx of new high-tech toys, gadgets, and accessories. Thankfully, homeowners can utilize a few quick steps to restore function and design to their living rooms and home offices.

Supplies:

• Cable Ties (also known as Wire Ties)

• Cable Tie Installation Tool
• Electrical Tape or Heat Shrink Tubing
• Adhesive Back Mounting Bases
• Surge Protector

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Start by unplugging and detangling all of the cables and cords.
2. Apply electrical tape or heat shrink tubing to any frayed cords and pull the cables together to a single meeting point.
3. Use the cable tie installation tool to fit a cable tie around the meeting point.
4. Every four to six inches, fit cable ties or wire ties to ensure the cords stay together. Using adhesive back mounting bases can help hide the bundle by attaching it to inconspicuous nooks in the desk, shelf, or entertainment center.
5. Plug the cords into the surge protector.

How much would the shipping cost for something off Amazon?

I'm going to order a Nintendo DS Lite, and a pink G-pak Organizer. The Lite is around $130, and the case is about $20. So a total of $150. How much does the shipping cost if I live in Ridgefield, Connecticut?
Also, how long on average, would it take if I don't get the overnight delivery?

You would need to contact somone from Amazon. A DS is light so it probable wouldnt cost much. It also depends on if you would want insurance for the shipping

How do you hook up my cable to my laptop?

I need to know how I can connect my cable to my laptop so I can watch and record tv onto it. My parents are able to do this with their desktop, but they have a coaxal attachment on the tower, which most laptops lack.

Why doesn't my digital converter box work with a cable cord?

I just bought a digital converter box, and it doesn't work with a cable from a wall! I plug it in, and do a scan for channels, and it doesn't find any! When I turn the box off, i can watch a few channels, but when it's on, I can't watch anything. Please help, I don't want to be out 60$.
No, it's set to cable. I just have a wire running from the wall, to the box, to the TV.

Do you have cable? you don't need a converter box for cable. if you only get a few channels without it, you may need to set your TV to cable and not antenna

If you don't have cable and you are trying to use the the cable cord as an antenna, that may be the problem also. You need a regular rabbit ears antenna to attach to the converter box or an outdoor antenna....if this is the case, I'm assuming you looked at the manual that came with the converter box and saw that it shows a picture of a cable cord attached to the converter box, but this is really a picture of an outdoor antenna's cord, which I'm guessing you don't have

Basically, if you have cable you can't use the box if you don't, you need a regular rabbit ears antenna.

How to Select a Wire or Cable

If you are about to purchase wire or cable for the first time, or even if you have purchased it in the past, you may find the task daunting.  After all, most distributors stock thousands of wire and cable products.  Your application may require ribbon cable, but which specific ribbon cable should you buy?  Having choices is important, but with so many choices, decision-making can become overwhelming.

Do you know what questions to ask?  Before beginning a search, equip yourself with the right knowledge.  Background information combined with basic preparation can give you some command during the buying process.  In the article, “Specifying High-Performance Cables: The Devil Is In The Details,” by Alpha Wire Company, they evaluate four main issues to be considered.  These are cable shielding, flexibility, chemical resistance, and temperature range.

Shielding

When purchasing cable, be sure to explore cable shielding.  Shielding ensures that the electrical process runs smoothly.  An engineer will tell you shielding minimizes problems of signal exit or entrance caused by interference.  Types offered include braid, foil, spiral, or a combination braid/foil shield.  Each type has advantages and disadvantages: 

Foil Shields:
Uses: CATV, MATV, Video, computer I/O cables
Advantages: 100% cable coverage, low weight and low cost
Disadvantages: High DC resistance and lower mechanical strength

Braid Shields:
Uses: Computers to terminate interconnect for process or control applications
Advantages: Great structural integrity, flexibility and flex life 
Disadvantages: Does not provide full coverage, heavy

Spiral Shield:
Uses: Microphone, audio cables and retractile cords
Advantages: Great flexibility and flex life
Disadvantages: Not effective above audio frequency range

Combination Shields:
Uses: Video, CATV, MATV, networking, computer I/O cables
Advantages: 100% foil coverage, strong and low resistance
Disadvantages: Higher cost than other shields

Chemical Resistance 

An engineer will tell you that electrical cables possess various levels of chemical resistance, but there may be more to it.  You should know which chemicals could present a potential problem in the entire lifespan of your cable.  Also, consider that oils and corrosive chemical vapors or liquids could potentially enter into the cable connections.  Any type of chemical intrusion could lead to cable failure.  You might need to add additional sealing to prevent moisture permeation. 

Temperature

Temperature range is another essential factor in the mix of things.  What temperatures will your cable need to withstand to be effective?  You may find that a cable possesses all the necessary electrical features required for extreme temperatures, but will it be able to adapt to the physical demands associated with that temperature? 

Flexibility & Flex

A flexible cable can make installation and troubleshooting much easier.  However, did you know that “flexing” is a different issue that needs to be addressed?  Due to the nature of many manufacturing applications, cables may encounter constant flexing.  Particular cables are built better for this than others.

Conclusion

There is more to finding the ideal cable than meets the eye.  Don’t be intimidated by choices.  A cable exists for just about every environment and application if you know what to look for.  Spend some time asking the right questions and consider every angle.

Remote for my DVD player works on PS2. Anyone else tried this?

The other day I was testing out what its like to watch DVDs on my PS2, when I grabbed the remote to my DVD player by mistake. After skipping a few scenes ahead, I realized somehow I was controlling my PS2 with the remote to my DVD player. Has this worked for anyone else? If most DVD remotes are tuned to the same frequency as the PS2, why is there a Playstation DVD kit for sale in stores? I'll admit there were a few functions I couldn't do with my DVD remote, like not being able to fast forward or pause.

Because those that buy a DVD Kit for PS2 don't have a DVD player with a fitting remote.
